Dr Andrew Sutherland graduated from the University of Adelaide in 1967 and completed his internship at the Royal Adelaide Hospital. He then trained as an orthopaedic surgeon in Toronto, Canada, and the UK returning to Adelaide in 1974 to work at the Women's and Children's Hospital and the Royal Adelaide Hospital as an adult and children's orthopaedic surgeon.

He was a foundation Member of both the Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America and the Australian Paediatric Orthopaedic Society. He has served the Australian Orthopaedic Association as a Board Member and the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons as the Senior Examiner in Orthopaedics, an elected member of the College Council and as President in 2007/08. He was Divisional Director Paediatric Surgery at the Women's and Children's Hospital from 1998 to 2008 and was Head of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery from 1996 to 2005. He has been an invited guest lecturer in paediatric orthopaedic and spine surgery in the Philippines, Kuwait, Vietnam, China, New Zealand and India and regularly participates in conferences and courses in Europe and North America.

His clinical practice has specialised in the orthopaedic problems of children and adolescents both at the Women's and Children's Hospital and through his private practice at Orthopaedics SA. He is also an accredited assessor for Workcover SA and is involved in a range of medico-legal work.
